Remembrance Service “Ooster begraafplaats” Enschede september 21st 2012

We supported this year’s Remembrance Service at the Oosterbegraafplaats in Enschede. This service is an initiative of the Prinseschool. The children get a historical background during history lessons.

The trigger for this service, is in the contacts that the school has to the Airborne museum in Oosterbeek, and the fact that victims of the “Brummen Drama” (P.O.W.’s that were shot in that village), were transported to Enschede in a cover-up.
On the  site of André van Aarsen, (who took the pictures), you’ll find a Dutch text as well about this tragic event, and here some more background information in English.

Apart from these victims, this small War Cemetary section contains the graves of members of the allied airforces, as well as casualties from the 1945 liberation of Twente.

Xmas eve 2011 at Holten Canadian War Cemetary

Like in previous years a delegation of our Pipe Band was present at the Holten Canadian war  cemetery to support the placing of the candles.

It’s a pleasant thought that this ceremony is being attended by so many children, and thereby passing on the memory of freedom and its sacrifices.

This year, no snow, mild temperature and an unclouded sky saving the daylight a bit longer.

Like always, the combination of  children placing the candles at every grave and the sound of “Midwinterhoorn” and Bagpipes made it a true beginning of Christmas

Here is a link to a news item of the regional TV, RTV-OOst

Remembrance at Enschede with children of Prinseschool

Together with the children of the Prinseschool in Enschede, we remembered the air crews that are buried there, as well as the victims of the Brummen escape during Market Garden.

Xmas 2010 Remembrance at the Holten Canadian War Cemetery

This year’s Xmas eve celebration at the Holten Canadian war cemetery had all aspects of a “White Christmas”, but that implied it was really cold.

The bitter cold even attempted to freeze the bagpipes

But this low temperature did not hinder the school children to place the candles at all the graves
